Envisioning Access Website
Greetings from the Executive Director

In January we began a discussion in this newsletter regarding our campaign A Road to a Million. Our goal is to raise $1 million by December 31, 2025. Due to your generosity, we are 50% of the way down the “road” to completion of the campaign. We could not have accomplished this amazing feat without your support.

The third and final of the three initiatives A Road to a Million supports is:

  • Finding a path to attaining higher education.

At Envisioning Access, we imagine a world where every student, regardless of their abilities, has the tools and support they need to learn, grow, and achieve their dreams. For millions of students with physical disabilities, this world remains out of reach.

Students with disabilities face systemic obstacles, from inaccessible learning materials to a lack of trained educators who understand their needs. In the United States alone, students with disabilities are 40% less likely to graduate from high school, limiting their future opportunities. Globally, the challenge is even greater. By working with tech start-ups and universities who are developing technologies that will allow students with physical disabilities to access campuses and classrooms either remotely or onsite the A Road to a Million campaign is undertaking an ambitious effort to transform education for students with disabilities by providing accessible technologies, training educators, and creating inclusive learning environments. Assistive technologies like text-to-speech programs, adaptive keyboards, and screen readers can make learning accessible to all students. Together, we can ensure that education becomes a pathway to opportunity, not a barrier.

We cannot do this work alone. We need your assistance to provide assistive technologies for learning. Your support will put life-changing tools directly into the hands of students, empowering them to participate fully in their education.

Why Now?

The need has never been greater—or the opportunity more exciting. Assistive technologies are evolving rapidly, making them more effective and affordable than ever.  Your gift to A Road to a Million will change the trajectory of students’ lives by breaking down barriers to education.

Together, we can make education accessible, equitable, and inclusive for all. Join Envisioning Access in ensuring that every student can achieve their full potential.

Make your gift today and help us pave the way for millions of bright futures.

Feinberg researchers find medical schools overlook disability in curricula

Researchers at the Feinberg School of Medicine recently found that medical schools in the U.S. overlook disability in their curricula. The study found this oversight affects how physicians care for patients with disabilities and also makes it harder for people with disabilities to become doctors.

According to the CDC, 28.7% of adults in the U.S. have a disability. Despite this figure, Feinberg Prof. Carol Haywood found that medical schools frame disability instead as a weakness and isolate it from other fields.

Chicago Public Schools fair aims to prepare students with disabilities for life after high school

Every year, The Student Transition FAIR (Fostering Access, Independence, and Responsibility) held last month at Malcolm X College in partnership with City Colleges of Chicago, is one opportunity students with disabilities have to explore their options for life after high school.

Just over 16.4% of Chicago Public Schools students have documented disabilities, a percentage that has grown in recent years. The district has historically struggled to provide required services to students with disabilities, who are less likely than their peers to graduate on time. Last school year, just over 75% of students with disabilities graduated on time, compared to about 81% of all students citywide.

Policy Brief: Addressing the Erosion of Disability Protections in the U.S. and U.K.

Executive Summary
Recent policy shifts in both the United States and the United Kingdom have led to substantial cuts in funding and protective measures for disability communities. These actions, aimed at reducing public spending, risk leaving millions of disabled individuals without essential services. This brief outlines the recent developments, examines the potential impacts on vulnerable populations, and emphasizes the urgent need for non-profit organizations—such as Envisioning Access—to step in and pick up the slack. To effectively serve the disability community, we need increased support from individuals, corporations, and philanthropic foundations to ensure that not only our organization has the means to do so, but also the many other organizations focused on the disability community in order to make sure no one is left behind.
